ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP SNAPS UP FIRST PRIZE IN THE GREAT UK GRASSROOTS GIVING PICTURE SHOW
An environmental community group in Carmarthenshire has won the Grassroots Giving photography competition and a £500 donation.
Previous winners of Skipton Building Society’s Grassroots Giving community funding scheme were invited to post a photograph on social media of someone or something which represented the positive change Skipton’s donation had made to the organisation.
Troserch Woodlands Society, situated near Llangennech, Wales, has been announced as the winner, with two other groups – Dewsbury Celtic RLFC in Yorkshire and Granite City Brawlers roller derby club in Aberdeen – were chosen as runners-up and received £100 donations.
Troserch Woodlands Society was set up in April 2006 when the woods were put up for sale by its former owners. With a lot of hard work over the following months, and the generous support of a grant by CydCoed, the group was finally able to buy the wonderful ancient woodland for the community in October of that year.
The society now exists to promote and uphold its original aims of protecting the pathways, encouraging the wildlife, and gradually introducing the native species of trees and plants that once thrived here, whilst also making the woods an enjoyable place to visit.
The competition judges said the entry from Troserch Community Woodland Society was “a unique and great composition showing three generations smiling, learning and having fun together. An amazing image demonstrating how photography is changing – a Selfie winning a photo competition.”
Skipton Building Society will be launching Grassroots Giving for 2018 on 1 May and we will be rewarding another 165 community organisations with total funding of £82,500. Full details can be found on this website.
