The Sunbeam Support Group

Your story

The Sunbeam Support Group provides support for families following the loss of a baby through miscarriage, stillbirth and neonatal death.

Group introduction

The Sunbeam Support Group has been active for 2 years. It was set up to support families in the Keighley and Craven who have suffered the devastating loss of a baby. We run a monthly support group to allow families to meet, this provides practical advice and allows like minded individuals to meet over coffee and cake and talk about their loss which is still such a taboo subject in society. It is run by bereaved parents and midwives from Airedale Hospital, this also allows positive change to be made in the hospital as feedback is passed on to the right people. We also have secured space at the hospital to provide a memory garden for families to visit and remember their babies. This garden is still in the early stages and funding is needed to provide items in the garden such as raised beds, paths and benches.

How would this funding have an impact on your community?

Funding will allow the garden project to move forward and will assist in making the garden a calm and beautiful space for people to go and remember their babies. The garden is a lasting legacy for families and it will benefit families for years to come, the group already has 30 families that it supports in the 2 years we have been running. In the U.K. 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage and 9 babies a day are Stillborn.

"Bev Beaumont - Bereavement Midwife at Airedale General Hospital - I am a bereavement support midwife and am passionate about providing ongoing support following a loss, the Sunbeam Support Group run by the midwives and parents provides this ongoing support and the garden project will help families in the years to come who suffer the tragic loss of a baby.
