Buddies group is made up of parents who have children with Special Needs and provides the opportunity for the children to access activities they may not ordinarily be able to, it provides a sense of belonging for the children and an opportunity for parents to come together and learn from each other.
The group provides fundraising, organises trips and plans activities throughout the year so that children of all abilities are able to access them with the support of each other. Often, when parents experience being in the community with their children, there is a sense of isolation, it can affect confidence and dependent on the childs needs, it can be difficult to go out and about. Buddies provides a safe and supportive environment where the children are able to access activities and socialise with their friends, outside of the school environment. The activities take place in the school holidays which can be a time when families need a support network around them. It is lovely to see the children enjoying themselves and being able to access something that allows them to be who they are and have support and love around them. The group will pay for the child in need to access activities which range from barges trips, Stockheld Park, Martin Mere, Lightwater Valley, Bendrigg Residential, Disney on Ice and much much more!
Often, families are unable to work due to the commitments they have with their childs medical and physical needs and therefore have limited income, the group are able to support this by paying for the child and one carer. The families work together to generate funding by holding coffee mornings etc. The group come together once a month to plan and take actions, there is also a facebook page where they can share ideas and information. There ar over 20 families who are members of the group.
