The Valley Walkfest

The Irvine Valley

Your story

The Valley Walkfest aims to encourage health living by offering a wide range of walks and outdoor activities around the Irvine Valley countryside.

Group introduction

The Valley Walkfest will celebrate its 17 year in 2019. A new community not for profit group took over the organisation in 2017 when the previous body was wound up. We encourage a healthy and active lifestyle by offering 14 walks over the May weekend. We cater for all ages and fitness levels and walks range from low level to challenging moorland hikes. Some tell the tale of the local rich history and heritage. We do not charge for walks and all our organisers, walk leaders and hall hosts are volunteers. We work with local organisations - schools, countryside rangers, walking groups and charities. To further broaden the appeal, other events include a School Walk, Bat Walk, Nature Trail, Orienteering, Cardio rehab walk, ski and bowling taster sessions and cycle and E Bike events.

How would this funding have an impact on your community?

We anticipate that the Walkfest will encourage people to continue walking as a health benefit and we hope that it will encourage people from outwith the Valley area to return. We normally attract around 400 people to the various events. The Town Trails in the three towns encourage an interest in the history of the area. In an age where childhood obesity is an ongoing concern, our school walk encourages children, under the guidance of the Countryside Rangers, to walk a few miles and discover local wildlife.
The funding would enable us to pay for the printing of our brochures and posters.
