Hyndburn Youth football club

Your story

In October 2010 Paul Hammerton noticed a worrying trend in football clubs in the area. Some were refusing children due to what they perceived as their footballing skill and level, meaning children who just wanted to play football were being denied the opportunity. As a parent Paul was not happy with this and Allan (Accrington Stanley Coach) offered support to create a new football club within the community that would service all children in the area.

The main aim was to give every child the opportunity to play, the club started with 6 children having training drills on Higham’s playing field, Accrington.

The club welcomes children from all backgrounds and never refuses anyone who just wants to play the game of football, we believe everyone who wants to play should have the opportunity too.

Since March 2014 the club partnered with All Saints Primary School, Clayton Le Moors to offer football to all the students via coaches visiting the school, but the school also allowed the club to use the school as a home base which has helped the club grow again.

As of May 2017 Hyndburn Youth has 12 teams in the East Lancashire Football league from Under 7’s to Under 16’s. With some age groups entering two teams due to the large amount of children in those age groups. As one of our key foundations is everyone should play this is the best way of getting each child the most time possible playing football.

All the above has not been easy, the club is run completely on volunteers and everyone has given more than we could ever have asked.

The local children of Hyndburn and surrounding area

How would this funding have an impact on your community?

The funding give us a step forward in securing our own training ground. Which will give the children the best facilities to train and play games in the same local area. We will be based at the same place for many years and will be central to the community so giving even more children access to sport. It will help at least 164 kids to keep playing football and socialising

"We are a local community group providing football and friendships for all ages completely ran by volunteers"
