Pelsall Ladies Choir

Pelsall, Walsall

Your story

We are a group of local women who use our enjoyment of singing together to raise money for charities.

Group introduction

Pelsall Ladies Choir began as a small group of ladies in a front room 52 years ago during which time they have raised thousands of pounds for charitable causes.
June Davenhill, the musical director of the choir has devoted her life to encouraging music making both as a teacher and choir leader and has been awarded the British Empire Medal for her services to music in the community and raising money for charities. June is assisted by Sue Briggs (assistant director) and Edward Lee, a talented musician and accompanist to the choir.
The choir raises money for a different charity each year. The choir members decide on the chosen charity.
Monies are raised at our main concerts which are held twice a year, in the summer and at Christmas, and also at events throughout the year such as Variety Evenings.
Recent charities we have raised money for have included Heart Link, St Mark’s Hospital Foundation, and Walsall Parkinson’s Group. We have also sung for the Mayor of Walsall’s Charity over several years, in addition to our own chosen charity.
The choir performs regularly at care homes and sheltered housing schemes, and is always open to invitation for any charity events. We recently performed to raise money to help pay for road closures during the village Remembrance Service at the cenotaph in November.
In March this year the choir entered, a music festival, for the first time in many years and were thrilled to win their class.
Our repertoire is varied, ranging from songs from shows, religious music, traditional songs and modern music arranged for three part ladies choirs.. These different musical genres mean that there is something within our programme to suit most musical tastes.

How would this funding have an impact on your community?

The Grassroots funding would allow us to fund new sets of choir music, enabling us to expand our repertoire further, so that we can strive towards an excellent level of performance and maximise our fund raising abilities.
We would also like to look smart and professional and the funding would help to subsidise the purchase of jackets for all choir members.
Any funding which we are awarded would be much appreciated by choir members and will most certainly be put to good use for the benefit of the charities we are involved with.
