Dance with Grace

New Addington, Croydon Surrey

Your story

My friend Amanda Grace runs a community dance school called Dance with Grace in New Addington. She has been the Current Principal for 17 years and the dance school is very popular in our area. She keeps costs down low just to cover her rent and just her wages as parents otherwise couldn't afford for their children to dance. She does so much for the community by doing a free dance show for the elderly at Christmas time. Some of the dancers take part for free in two pantomimes each year, which is Sanderstead & West Wickham which they all thoroughly enjoy. They also take part in our local carnival and do a float at Christmas time too. They are an excellent dance school that like to make a difference in our community. They do a dance show each year at The Stag Theatre in Sevenoaks and they also take exams yearly with 100% pass rate. They also each year compete at The British Arts Awards dance Competition which they always achieve Gold, Silver & Bronze trophies and Medals which is an amazing achievement for this Dance school.

Group introduction

Dance with Grace is a community dance school that has been running for 45 years, 17 years under it's current principal Amanda Grace. They teach girls & boys from 3 years - 38 years including ballet, tap, modern, street, singing, drama and pointe. They teach Mondays - Fridays 4pm - 8pm and on Saturdays 10am - 2pm. They are based in New Addington and Dance at The Addington Community Centre which they use with other community groups. This building is due to be demolished next year therefore Dance with Grace are going to transform a derelict building that is old football changing rooms that is disused on Milne Park, New Addington CR0 0BB and transform this building into 3 dance studio's for Dance with Grace, including two toilets, small kitchen & Reception. This building will also be used by other community groups and used as a polling station too. By transforming this building it brings a building back to life and used in our community. So it gives something at the top end of our estate for the community to use. This is such an exciting project for us but the dance school doesn't have any funds therefore would be so grateful for any help. If you look on The Croydon Advertiser website and search dance with grace you will see our story asking the community for help and we also have a go fund me page set up too trying to raise £80,000. This is to raise funds so we can transform this building and buy things for inside the building as well. I have been going round local shops, companies, schools asking for a kind donation and they will be thanked on our go fund me page, in The Croydon Advertiser, facebook page, Dance with Grace show programme, they will receive a Thank you Certificate and their shop, company, school name will be on a plaque in the building too. The Croydon Advertier are going to do a follow up story when building works begin and do a story of the building once completed.
So many shops have been so kind in donating and a small local school done a mufti day raising £177, other schools are going to do a mufti day in October. The local bank is doing a cake sale for us, so everyone is getting involved and coming together as one. So it is really lovely to see. So far we have raised nearly £2,000.
We will also get dance parents that are qualified to help once building works starts by giving free labour and i will go round building companies to see if they can donate some materials.

How would this funding have an impact on your community?

This funding will have a massive impact on our community as it will help make this happen. We can buy some equipment for the Dance school. Some fixed and freestanding ballet barres & Mirrors for the Dance studio's. They will be used all the time and by everyone. Once this building is active the dance school can expand dancing services to reinstate lessons for children with special needs and offer classes for adults and retired adults and possibly antenatal exercise. So this really is a brilliant dance school that like to make a difference to the community within it serves.

"Jo Thorpe - Dance Mum

Dance with Grace is a brilliant dance school in New Addington that wants to transform derelict football changing rooms on Milne Park into 3 dance studio's and make a difference to our community. This will 100% improve the area where we live and it will have such a positive impact on our community."
