Rochdale Retirement Choir

Your story

A choir for older people, singing mainly for pleasure with some charity concerts.

Group introduction

We are a self-funding independent group established around 20 years ago. We are managed by an elected committee and pay for a musical director and a pianist for rehearsals and concerts.

We offer opportunities for older people to pursue a hobby and to meet others weekly, and they also gain significant health benefits from being in the choir. Members avoid the dangers of isolation and loneliness by meeting others regularly, they find a purpose in life after retirement and there is strong evidence that singing improves heart and lung function. Our age range is from 65 to 85 and we are an open group, no auditions are required, just an interest in singing.

How would this funding have an impact on your community?

The grant would help us buy new music for the group and allow us to broaden our repertoire. It would also help us with the cost of renting a rehearsal venue.
