Barrasford Scout group

Your story

We run a group of about 85 children up to the age of 14. We are all volunteers and we struggle to cover all our running costs and need to buy new equipment. We only charge the children £2.70 a session.

Our scouts are having to move to a new venue as we are expending and getting a new older group. We now need to buy new equipment for them as they will be on a different site to our current group.

Group introduction

Barrasford Scout Group started in 2013 with less than 20 children, aged 5-14 years old, offering activities one night per week to 2 different sections. Now, just over 3 years later, we have expanded to over 85 children in total, catering for ages 5 - 18, across 4 different sections, on 3 different nights. We have also grown from a team of 8 adult volunteers to a team of 16, enabling us to offer a varied and engaging weekly programme, additional weekend activities, plus over 5 (and growing!) different camping opportunities per year.

At Barrasford we are also proud that we buck the national trend and that over 45% of our youth members are female.  We also cater to children well beyond our geographic catchment area, having youth members travel from over 15 different rural villages, up to 16 miles away!

We endeavour to be as inclusive as possible and try to remove financial barriers of participation by keeping our weekly session costs as low as possible, at the cost of £2.70 per week. Through this, we hope that we can engage with as many young people from our rural communities as possible, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds who can gain so much from Scouting.

We also look to absorb or reduce the costs of weekend activities and camps to encourage maximum participation.   On a needs and merit basis, we will sometimes be able to waive individual term or camp fees, should finances be prohibitive to a child's membership or attendance.  All of this is achieved through additional fundraising throughout the year by our adult volunteers and parents of our members.

How would this funding have an impact on your community?

We need new games equipment, maps, compasses, head torches, cooking equipment for camps, and first aid kits; which are essential when we go on walks and camps. We support children from 15 local rural villages and up to 16 miles away. With new equipment it will last us for years to come and help children in a wide range of activities.
