Ilkeston Swimming Club
Ilkeston Swimming Club was formed in 1972. We are a competitive, but family-friendly Club that provides a key service for the local Community on a not for profit basis. Our membership base currently stands at approximately 300 members, and we intend to continue the growth of the Club by providing our swimmers with prospects of development both in swimming and academically. Our coaching team aim to create a winning culture and a success driven training environment that breads successful well-rounded participants.
Throughout our journey, we have taught and coached children, young adults and masters’ swimmers, ranging from beginners to the top swimmers in the Country. We have swimmers attending County, Regional and National level competitions. During the past four years, numerous swimmers have been selected for the Derbyshire performance pathway, which demonstrates how strong the Club has become in a short space of time.
We understand the importance of teaching this vital life skill that could save a life. Furthermore, the Club recognises the impact of giving participants opportunities to grow, develop, and to enjoy the sport. As a result, the swimmers benefit from the fulfilment of their own potential.
Affiliated to the East Midlands ASA, Ilkeston Swimming Club is run by volunteers who dedicate their spare time to teach and coach participants from the surrounding communities. The Club is inclusive for all, with many of our participants having intellectual or physical disabilities. Our poolside team are ASA qualified & DBS checked. Volunteer members are always enrolling on courses to develop their skills on a continuous basis, thus ensuring we can provide the best service to our aspiring champions!
As a family friendly Club, we deliver learn-to-swim lessons on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sundays for our younger members. The progression we offer can then take a swimmer through to represent the Club in local League Galas, Open Meets, County competitions and beyond. The coaching programme is provided by an experienced and professional team of coaches, six days a week at the Victoria Park Leisure Centre.
Our Club were Champions of the Leicester Winter Swimming League, the Jamie Rigby Gala and the JC Dobb Trophy in 2015 season. Every year we take a large group of swimmers to Counties and in the past four seasons, a total of nine swimmers have represented the Club at Regional level, with one being invited to swim at the National Championships.
With the exception of our Head Coach, all those helping on the Committee and Coaching team are unpaid volunteers and the Club relies on membership fees alone to cover the ever increasing costs of our overheads, such as pool hire. We rely on fundraising, Sponsorship and local Grants to allow us to buy Club kit, swim training equipment and most importantly training courses for our volunteer teaching assistants & coaches.
How would this funding have an impact on your community?
The Club’s future relies on the development of our coaching & teaching team and in conjunction with the East Midlands ASA’s “Leading the Lanes” project aimed at 14-16 year olds, funding would allow us to support up to 5 young swimmers from the local community who have all expressed their commitment to developing coaching skills. This next generation of young coaches will start by gaining the ASA Level 1 Teaching Assistant qualification and participate in delivering the essential learn to swim programme. Our training plan will ensure that our own swimmers stay actively involved with the Club and the sport of swimming and also that we can continue to provide our local community with the high quality teaching it has come to expect.
"Ilkeston Swimming Club is proud to support the next generation of young coaches to achieve their goals, and to continue our high standard of teaching and coaching in the local community. Our club motto is hard work conquers everything, and these aspiring volunteers are going to help deliver the clubs vision to many members of the community.
