All Crafters Great and Small incorporating Thirsk Yarnbombers
Residents of Thirsk bring the town alive with wool.
On 9th December 2015 myself and a friend decided to yarnbomb Thirsk. This was to celebrate the Tour de Yorkshire passing through the town on 1st May 2016. Initially we were just going to knit a 'few flags'. Eventually over 200 residents joined in and under the cover of darkness on the 24th April we literally decorated the whole town with our creations.
Many of our members were new to the area and were able to make new friends. Elderly residents in care homes joined in and took up the art of knitting and crochet again and came along to meetings. A number of members were suffering from depression and as a result their spirits have been lifted and they are back socialising. Thirsk has benefited from extra visitors.
Members range in age from 1-97!
How would this funding have an impact on your community?
We have so far relied on donations from local businesses and spent over £1000. We are keen to keep the group going and have registered ourselves as a group, in order to have a bank account and set up a committee. The funding would enable us to hire a room for meetings, buy wool and equipment for all residents to use. A number of members are low income and we could provide them with materials.
