Action for Stannington
Set up as a neighbourhood based, wide-ranging environmental organisation in 1999, Action for Stannington has been allowing fellow residents to participate in a variety of activities aiming at cleaner, greener and safer streets.
Environmental work is at the heart of what the volunteers do. They always keep in mind the importance of bridging the generational gap between the younger, and older section of the population. Run entirely by volunteers, Action for Stannington has been helping young people from a disadvantaged background, offering work-based opportunities, as well as supporting older residents with gardening services. Currently helping with the upkeeping of the local park, the war memorial, and engaging in a variety of reduce, reuse and recycle activities. These include door step collection of selected recyclable items, and running a neighbourhood recycling site.
How would this funding have an impact on your community?
Working with young people requires a strong degree of structure in the activities we organise. Alongside the statutory requirements, a duty of care is the key to ensure the young volunteers work in a safe environment. This translates in the availability of Personal Protection Equipment, correct workwear, boots and tools for the jobs.
The grant from Skipton Building Society would help buy and maintain such equipment and tools. Around ten young people are engaged on a yearly basis, with an overall number of volunteers varying between twenty five and thirty.
""Generating a feel-good factor is important in allowing individual residents to play their part, big or small, towards a clean, green and safe neighbourhood for all to enjoy"
Danny Piermattei MBE,
