Young Portonian Theatre Company

Your story

Local children's theatre group.

Group introduction

We are a local theatre company for children aged 9 and over who live or go to school in Grangemouth and is run by volunteers. We have a team of 10 adults with the help of parents when required.

Some of the team have been with the company since the beginning; I have been helping in the company for 20 years and been on the team for the past 6 years as business manager. We help children to work with other children from the various schools in Grangemouth, to take instruction from adults other than their parents or teachers and we also help the community who enjoy our annual pantomime in our local Town Hall in November.

We also put on a spring production in April every year in a local community centre and enter the One Act Play competition run by the Scottish Community Drama Festival in February/March each year which we have won twice in previous years. This also lets some of the children mix and work with other children from other parts of Scotland. It can also help to give confidence; my own daughter joined as a very shy 10 year old 20 years ago and now has been the company director for the past 5 years.

How would this funding have an impact on your community?

We would spend the money on replacing sound equipment, which is always needing updating. Sound equipment changes and we always need to keep up to date with it, microphones and speakers can be expensive. We are always needing to buy wood, paint, screws, etc, to build scenery and props, material to make costumes, stage make-up for productions. These items would remain in the company for a number of years so would benefit many children in future productions.
