Settle Folk Gathering

Your story

We run a free folk festival in Settle the first weekend in September - from the Thursday to the Sunday each year.

Group introduction

Based around the Victoria Hall where the main concerts take place we also have open sessions in the pubs where anybody can join in making music, a family ceilidh on the Friday and teams of Morris dancers dancing in the town square. Last year we brought an estimated 1,000 people into the town and all for free. How do we do it? We sing / play / have raffles and collect so that we have enough to pay the artists. So far we have had groups from Brittany, the UK and the USA bringing great music and a lot of fun to the Yorkshire Dales and increases people's interest in the traditional music and dance of these islands.

How would this funding have an impact on your community?

The price of sound hire has gone through the roof and will cost us £1,000 pounds this year. £500 would be a real help in meeting that cost which has gone up from last years £700. We have just about enough money to pay the artists and some of the sound - but could really do with a leg up.

"Settle Folk Gathering is a great family affair welcoming people to the Dales with a mix of songs tunes and dance taking place over four days in a grand traditional Yorkshire town.
